Golf Course

The Golf Course at Tantallon Offers You an Always-Formidible, Always-Enjoyable Test

Occasionally we are asked about the name, Tantallon.  Our golf course, and indeed our country club were named after Tantallon castle, a formidable stronghold built atop cliffs in Northern Scotland in the 14th century by one of the most powerful baronial families in Scotland.

Like Tantallon castle, the golf course at Tantallon Country Club is a formidable site, and has stood the test of time. Opened for play in 1965, it is first and foremost a Ted Robinson-designed classic.

Ted Robinson has designed over 170 golf courses throughout the world over the past 40 years.

We proudly tell everyone that Tantallon is his only east coast design. More importantly, this is a golf course that our members always find challenging… never playing quite the same from day to day. Playing ‘every club in you bag’ isn’t just something we think sounds good, it is a fact you can count on.

Contact Robert Wallace, Head Golf Professional at 301-292-1100 ext. 101 for more information.

Tantallon follows Robinson’s overall philosophy that ‘the overriding objective of good course design is a balance between the golfer attacks, and the designer defends, creating an effective and rewarding experience for golfers at all levels of play.’

Tantallon offers you such a golf course, achieving what Robinson always has as his three major objectives: Flexibility, Memorability and Natural Beauty. The variety of challenges you’ll face, the unique holes and greens you’ll remember, and the beauty of our tree-lined, rolling fairways is a testimony to achieving these objectives.

While we consider the entire course to be exceptional, two holes in particular are noteworthy, for very different reasons.

Number 15 is probably the most feared hole on the golf course. This par 3 test will provide those who insist on the challenge of playing from the ‘blues’ a 220-yard carry to a three-tiered green. All we can add is good luck!

Especially during your first round at Tantallon, you’ll be impressed by memorable view from number 16 tee box, with an inspiring view of the Washington monument, a reminder of how close to D.C. you really are.

We look forward to welcoming you to your first round at Tantallon Country Club. Rest assured… you’ll eagerly anticipate your second round.
